The Lord Chamberlain's Regulations

We did make amends to that with the Lord Chamberlain when later on we set to music his regulations controlling the London Theatre, and this really brings our story full circle, because this was performed as the finale of fresh airs, which opened in 1956 at the Comedy, and was, itself, the last revue of its type to appear in the west end of London. In don't know why the fashion changed, by change it did. One reason, probably, was that the writers started to invade the stage themselves, as we did at the end of that year. People we'd been writing for, marvelous people like Max Adrian, the rest, other names we've not yet mentioned, Desmond Water Ellis, Ian Wallace, Prunella Fielding, Ian Carmichael, all these people went on to other great things, Laurier Lister took over and still runs a theatre at Guildford, but the revues as we knew them, that had given Donald and me so much pleasure, and fairly modest profit, they were finished. So, these settings of the Lord Chamberlain's regulations were the end of one era, and at the same time the beginning of another, because Donald and I used them as encores when we later came to do our own show, At the Drop of a Hat. And that of course, is another story.

Smoking is permitted in the Auditorium,
Smoking is permitted in the Auditorium,
So if you want to have a smoke and you've got the price,
Just light it up and puff away to paradise,
Because Smoking is permitted in the auditorium.

Smoking is permitted in the Auditorium,
Smoking is permitted in the Auditorium,
So if you want to have a smoke and you've got the price,
Just light it up and puff away to paradise,
Because Smoking is permitted in the auditorium.

The safety curtain must be lowered (raised) in the presence of each audience.

MF: It's a beautiful little thing, isn't it.

Finally, Finally, our finale, what else, sung by the entire company, Pat, Bunty, Anne, Julian, dear chums, Donald and I thank you very much for helping us with our read-through, this last Lord Chamberlain's regulation carried a gentle hint to our audience, who we also thank, don't we Donald...
DS: We do.
MF: I hope we all meet again soon. Meanwhile, the public may leave.

The public may leave at the end of each performance by all the exit doors,
The public may leave at the end of each performance by all the exit doors,
All gangways, passages and staircases,
Must be kept entirely free,
Of chairs, or any other obstruction,
The public may leave at the end of each performance by all the exit doors,
And all such doors must at that time be open.
They've gotta be open!
They've gotta be open!
