Characters

Victor

Victor's John Cleese impressionSenior partner in Naughtiness International (Victor and Hugo's crooks-for-hire company), and self-proclaimed criminal mastermind. Unfortunately for Victor, this is very far removed from the truth. Lazy, vain and self-centred, Victor has few redeeming qualities, a grasp of his own incompetence definitely not being among them. However, he takes his work very seriously, and expects Hugo to do the same. This seemingly mature attitude doesn't stop him from constantly picking on his little brother as if they were both still under ten, though. Victor dreams of wealth and success but basically lives a life of constant misfortune and indignity, which may go some way towards explaining his foul temper.

Did you know?

  • Victor either cannot or will not drive. This means that Hugo always drives the van, which is not a good thing.
  • His favourite thing other than himself is probably his tie.
  • Victor's name is entirely ironic, as he's one of life's born losers.
  • Most likely to say "It is your fault. It is all your fault. It is ALWAYS your fault."

Hugo

HugoIt's pretty easy to describe Hugo; take any adjective you could apply to Victor and use the opposite. Fun-loving and innocent, Hugo seems to regard his life of crime more as an amusing game than a serious vocation. He can make Victor angry by saying or doing virtually anything, and frequently does. Despite the insults and screaming fits thrown at him by his sadistic sibling, Hugo treats Victor with genuine admiration and affection (most of the time). This may, however, be a side-effect of the fact that he's dumb as a rock, although he does have an uncanny knack of spotting flaws in Victor's plans...

Did you know?

  • One of Hugo's favourite pastimes is doing animal impressions, to Victor's unending annoyance.
  • The only thing that Hugo hates are the police. He has panic attacks whenever they are mentioned.
  • Hugo's distinctive voice was based on the character of Bluebottle, played by the late Peter Sellers in radio comedy the Goon Show.
  • Most likely to say "...that's what I think, anyway" or "Yes, and no. But mainly, no."

Interpoll

InterpollVictor and Hugo's cynical pet parrot, who also happens to be a telephone and answering machine. How? Who knows. Arguably the most intelligent member of Naughtiness International, Interpoll usually prefers to laugh at V&H rather than actually help them. He lives in constant fear of being killed by Hugo's bad driving, and is probably right to do so.

Did you know?

  • Interpoll is an East End Multicolour, a very rare parrot breed.
  • He hates other birds, and often refuses to do bird things like flying.
  • He can speak many languages, including Dog, but apparently not including French.
  • Most likely to say "Where's me tablets??"

Penelope

PenelopeHugo's adorable pet earwig and confidante. When Hugo periodically gets sulky about his unfair treatment at Victor's hands, Penelope offers a sympathetic ear (she's an earwig, geddit??). Lives in a matchbox in Hugo's pocket, and speaks to him in tiny squeaks which he seems to have no trouble understanding. Victor doesn't like her at all, and she feels the same about him.

Meccaneaux

MeccaneauxNaughtiness International's tech support, an odd little mechanic with a great line in rambling dialogue. Monsieur Meccaneaux is summoned whenever the van needs fixing or something needs building, and his bizarre speeches are always met with mute incomprehension by the two crooks. Despite his French-sounding name, he actually seems to be from Yorkshire, or somewhere similar up North.

Baskerville

BaskervilleA small and vicious dog with a very peculiar mission in life – to appear randomly one or twice per episode and rob Victor of his dignity or, more specifically, his underwear. Hugo secretly rewards him for doing this. What he does with the purloined pants afterwards is anyone's guess, but the Tate is said to be interested.

Did you know?
Baskerville is only named in production material: on screen, he's referred to simply as "that wretched dog", or "good doggy", depending on who's doing the referring.
