Loot

This page contains details of the merchandise that was or is available for many of the older Cosgrove Hall shows (the newer ones are generally covered in their entries in the Shows section). Of course, it's not exhaustive, because some had a seemingly endless range of tie-ins, and I couldn't possibly list them all. It also has a link to a page of reviews of the latest releases of videos, DVDs and so forth, if I get hold of them. Victor and Hugo doing their thing

When you're done here, you can go to the Buying Stuff page for tips on how to find rare merchandise, such as deleted videos.

Alias the Jester

Alias book You won't find much in the shops right now, but back when it was on TV, there was a fair bit of Alias merchandise. Most of it was books: puzzle books, story books based on the TV episodes, colouring books etc. Virtually all of these were put out by St Michael, the Marks & Spencer people. There was also a video containing six episodes. Oh, and some jigsaws and stuff too. Sadly (although not surprisingly), none of these are particularly easy to find anymore.

07/04/03 Alert! Fremantle Media are releasing an episode of Alias the Jester on a DVD entitled "Most Wanted Classic Kids' TV" in April 2003. With a little luck, they may follow it up with DVDs of the rest of the series... who knows...

30/12/05 NEWS! As of February 2006, you will be able to buy all 13 episodes in a DVD box set, released by Delta Music PLC (who??). It will be Region-free, but since the format is still PAL rather than NTSC, some of you overseas people might not be able to play it. Amazon.co.uk is accepting pre-orders for the extremely tempting price of £5.99.

The BFG

The BFG DVDUnfortunately, there wasn't much merchandise available for this fine film when it came out. Naturally, there was Roald Dahl's original book, and a video release with a nice shiny cover. I'm reasonably sure there were tie-in books based on the film too. Nowadays, you can buy it in all its glory on both VHS and DVD. There are extras on the DVD too, such as games, interviews with the creators, and an interactive storyboard, so it's a good one to add to your collection!

Chorlton and the Wheelies

Pearson TV realised that many British people have been wailing and gnashing their teeth for copies of this show, and have put them out of their misery with videos and DVDs. There are six videos in total, covering the whole of seasons 1, 2 and 3, the Christmas special, and the spring special too! Woohoo! They're available in the usual video-vending places. A few other Chorlton episodes appeared on video in the 80s, on a tape called "Chorlton and Jamie's Magic Box"(tee hee). This is deleted now, though, so if you desperately want a copy you'd A selection of Chorlton VHS and DVDsbetter hop over to the buying page to find out where you might get it. In keeping with the current retro kids' TV trend, you can also find Chorlton greetings cards and wrapping paper in selected shops. Now, when are they going to release a talking plush Chorlton, eh?

Count Duckula

Some of the many Duckula booksLots and lots and LOTS. Offhand I can remember:

  • At least 10 books, including a joke book
  • Plush and plastic toys
  • Duvet cover and curtains
  • Photo album
  • Comics
  • Stickers and stationery
  • Wrapping paper and greetings cards
  • Board game and jigsaws
  • Mugs and an eggcup
  • Candy Duckula jigsaw Duckula paint-by-numbers
  • 8-bit computer games
  • Clothing, including a Duckula costume
  • Videos and cassettes
  • Card games
  • Paint-by-numbers kits
  • Children's chewable vitamin tablets (I kid you not)

Currently, you can get Duckula on VHS and DVD in the UK, released by Pearson TV. The older videos are pretty easy to find second-hand too, as are the books.

30/12/05 NEWS! It's taken a long time, but for those of you in the USA the wait is finally over. The entire first season of Duckula - that's 26 episodes - is now available from Capital Entertainment in a Region 1 DVD box set, with a bunch of extras too! These include interviews, an image gallery and even "How to draw Duckula" with the very lovely Mike Whaite, who worked on the show way back when. People in Britain who have multi-region DVD players will have no problem playing the disks, but you might prefer the Uk release... see below. If you feel the need to buy it this very second, try PlayUSA or Amazon.com.

27/09/06 NEWS! Yes, the complete first season of Duckula is now available in the UK in a Region 2 boxset. It has the same content as the US release as far as I can tell, but with a slightly different cover. Hurrah! It's widely available online and on the high street (from shops, obviously, not from Big Issue sellers).

Dangermouse

Dangermouse books Wow, where to begin? In its heyday, there was TONS of Dangermouse merchandise, from stuffed toys and erasers to bubble-bath, soap, clothes, and my personal favourite – knitting patterns! A large number of books were released, including the much sought-after "The Dangermouse File", which, despite being illustrated by some kind of amputee chimp, was filled with more Dangermouse trivia than any sane person would want to know. Plus, it told you how to be a secret agent! How cool is that?? There were also quite a few DM videos released during the 80s, all of which are now deleted. Don't despair, though, because a number of Dangermouse DVDs and videos are currently widely available in the UK, containing some of the earlier episodes. There are also a few posters; one of DM and Penfold, one of Penfold being chased by a bomb(!), and one of all the characters.

August 26th, 2002: As of this date, you can get three different sizes of Dangermouse and Penfold plush toys (the middle size are talking ones), Dangermouse and Penfold pencilcases, stationery, keychains, a mousemat, and posters. Best places offline for these are branches of Woolworths and Beatties; online, try a good search engine, such as Google.

October 11th, 2002: Pictures! Get your pictures, while they're hot! Here are the new DM and Penfold talking toys and dangly keyrings. Nice, eh?

December 30th, 2005: NEWS! The answer to the question that I get asked most frequently and which annoys me the most (not really - I love you all). Dangermouse IS available in on DVD in the USA, in two comprehensive box sets released by A&E home video. The first set contains the 17 episodes that make up series 1 and 2, the second the 14 episodes of series 3 and 4. According to Amazon.com, series 5 and 6 are also on their way. Although there are no extras, these releases might be the fans' best and only chance to complete their Dangermouse collection. And they're cheap, too! Now go away and stop emailing me about this. I was lying about loving you.

September 27th, 2006: REALLY EXCITING NEWS! At last, the whole of Dangermouse - yes, that's EVERY EPISODE, plus extras, is now available on DVD in Britain on a Region 2, 12-disk box set. Holy Cow! Get it online from Amazon, or try your luck on the high street. But it IS out there!

- ALSO - There's now a dedicated online store for Dangermouse goods. What! You cry, where is this thing? Why, it's here, and it's called The Dangermouse Shop. Brilliant!

Jamie and the Magic Torch

Jamie videoFor years, people struggled in vain to find episodes of this show, but not any more; those nice people at Fremantle Media have released both the first series and second series on VHS and DVD, for our viewing pleasure. These are widely available from the usual places both online and in the real world. There are some Jamie books from the 70s too, although obviously they're out of print now. There may have been other stuff, but it's going back a bit far for me to remember. More news as I find it.

Victor & Hugo

BooksA modest amount of merchandise was available for a while in 1991-92, consisting of one video and about six books. The video, containing three episodes from series one, is worth digging out if you can; be warned, however, it's VERY hard to find these days. Two of the short hardback books were also available with audio cassettes, narrated by Jimmy Hibbert (he also fills in for David Jason as Hugo and Interpol on these cassettes).

07/04/03 Alert! Fremantle Media are releasing an episode of Victor & Hugo on a DVD entitled "Most Wanted Classic Kids' TV" in April 2003. With a little luck, they may follow it up with DVDs of the rest of the series... who knows...

27/09/06 FYI - There's a petition circulating to get this show released on DVD. Not many signatures so far, but if you follow the link and make a contribution - well, who knows?

The Wind in the Willows

The feature-length DVDI don't know very much about this show or the merchandise it generated, but I do know for sure that there were an awful lot of videos released. I believe these covered both the original series and the Oh! Mr Toad! spin-off. Most of the original releases are deleted, but Fremantle Media recently put out a DVD of the feature-length version. The DVD has the following features:

  • Interactive game
  • Song chapter points
  • Interview with Brian Cosgrove
  • Photo Gallery
  • Character biographies
  • Animated Menus

It's critically-acclaimed too, so what more encouragement do you need to buy it?

30/12/05 NEWS! The complete first and second series of this show are now available in Region 1 box sets, released by A&E Home Video. Each one contains extras and lots of episodes for your pennies. We don't have a comparable UK release yet, but anyone with a multi-region DVD player will be able to watch these disks. Amazon.com is your best bet for getting both series.
