Characters
Chorlton
Chorlton hatched out of an egg one day in Wheelie World, and freed the Wheelies from Fenella's sadness spell. Despite the fact that they found him odd-looking, the Wheelies wanted to adopt their new-found saviour, but he didn't know where he came from or even what his name was. Then someone happened to notice that the words "Made in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy" were written on his egg, so they named him Chorlton. He drives Fenella crazy by totally missing the point of her evil schemes, and refusing to take her at all seriously. But although Chorlton's not too bright and rather clumsy, his heart's in the right place.
Chorlton also has the distinction of being the first in a line of CH characters to have a broad Northern accent, with accompanying affectations ("Ecky thump!" "Ee, that's gradely!" etc.). Interestingly, despite the fact that the theme song says quite clearly that Chorlton is a dragon, I always saw him as some kind of shaved dog. Must be the ears, I suppose.
- Did you know?
- In case anyone missed the joke, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy is the amusingly named suburb of Manchester where Cosgrove Hall is based.
Fenella
The Wicked Welsh Kettle Witch who wants to make Wheelie World an unhappy place to be. Fenella lives in a giant kettle called Spout Hall, along with her various nasty minions. She also has an ENORMOUS, non-evil son named Clifford, who only ever appears as an hilarious Monty Python-esque giant foot. Presumably this means there must have been a Mr Fenella at some point, although his fate remains unknown.
Fenella's lackeys
- Riley, the Irish telescope used by the Kettle Witch to spy on Wheelie World.
- German spellbook, ClapTrap Von SpilldaBeans.
(Point of interest: Mark Hall said in a recent interview that this show caused trouble when it was shown overseas, because ClapTrap has a supposed Star of David on his front cover, and Hebrew-like writing inside. Since he was German, this was seen by some people as being an insult to Jews, although CH are adamant that it was merely a very unfortunate coincidence. Amazing, eh?)
- Several spiky things called the Spiners.
- The Toadies, a bunch of sinister-looking mushrooms which pop in and out of the ground with a brilliant "wyew" sound effect.
The Wheelies
An amiable bunch of coloured blobs with wheels instead of feet (easier to animate ^_^). They are ruled over by King Otto and Queen Doris. Other Wheelie regulars include girly pink Wheelie Jenny, Zoomer, the fastest Wheelie in Wheelie World, and the Minister of Wheel Estate (the blue moustachioed one).
